The world of laptops is about to get a major shake-up as with the arrival of the Asus S6 series. These laptops do feature the latest Centrino Duo Components and they are the first to feature the permanent real leather panels. This laptop has chosen to deck the rear of the screen and the palm rest below the keyboard in a real cow-leather material. It possesses a gunmetal-grey keyboard and matching mouse touch pad that makes it a pleasant change to the plethora of matte-black input devices. This lap do consists of the VGA port, a hard-wired switch that enables and disables the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios and much more features that make this S6F a beautiful laptop that needs to be possessed.

This AsusS6F as said is the one that could brought changes in the look of the laptops. The company could be given a full credit, for shoving the laptop with the latest Centrino Duo Technology. It uses the Intel 945 Gm chipset and an Intel Centrino Duo L2400 dual-core CPU running at a speed of 1.66 GHz with 1 GB DDR2 memory. This laptop used the 11.1 inch TFT SXGA screen with the resolution of 1,366X768 pixels and has Asus’ glossy color shine coating. But its small size means it can be difficult to read.

Keyboard had surprisingly large buttons that gives a comfortable type on and the mouse touch pad proved responsive, however its square-ish shape doesn’t matter the flatter, rectangular aspect ration of the screen. Behind the magnetically sealed flap there are VGA port and a hard wired switch that is used to enable and disable the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, along with this are the modem, LAN, well- spaced USB ports and a mic jack. BETT is the worlds largest educational technology show, it is running next week, from the 9th to the 12th of January at London Olympia. There will be about 30,000 visitors to the show including teachers, head teachers, ICT coordinators etc. from schools around the UK, Europe and the world. Schools visit BETT to see innovations and technology trends to help guide their IT strategy. I will be helping out on The Open Forum Europe stand SW105, where we will be distributing Edubuntu CDs and spreading the word about Free software and Open Standards.

Just before Christmas I bought an OLPC for my kids through the Give One Get One programme, so when I was asked to help at BETT I figured it would be the perfect place to show off the little green laptop. Unfortunately it is stuck in the post, somewhere on its way from America to the UK. It got as far as my brother in law in Massachusetts, but then got stuck in the Christmas rush of parcels.

In the mobile computing world, quad-core processing and chipset refreshes are almost as certain as death and taxes. Fortunately, 2008 looks set to be a more exciting year than simply watching specifications grow.
The upcoming CES will be a fertile ground for the latest breakthroughs in technology. However, many of the prototypes showcased may take years before hitting the retail market, assuming they are not vaporware. So keep an eye out for our extensive coverage of the event for laptops of the future. For now, check out our educated guesses at which areas in mobile computing are likely to make the most impact in the coming year.
UMPCs equal ultraportables in performance
The ASUS Eee PC did more for the UMPC cause than others did due to its ground-breaking price point. This will pave the way for more vendors entering this niche market with cheaper or more powerful products.
Though the original intent was for UMPCs to become companions for your primary computing device, this group of machines may soon hit the same performance bracket as full-fledge ultraportables. Already, models like the Gigabyte U60 and Packard Bell EasyNote XS20 are running at 1GHz clockspeed. With the combination of faster flash-based storage and improved graphics engines, the time may come when choosing between a UMPC and an ultraportable becomes a matter of screen size preference.
Design becomes as important as specifications
With Intel dominating the mobile CPU and chipset scene, there is really very little performance difference between getting a laptop from a premium vendor versus one from a budget manufacturer. So getting laptops based on specifications have become as useful as buying a car based on the number of tires.
